We have heard a lot about the negative effects of peer pressure but the peers do have a lot more positives on the growth of an individual child. It is important to understand that peer interaction and childhood friendship are two essential assets of one’s learning experience. There are a lot of things that children learn in a group. They share their ideas, thoughts and create new ones while talking or playing with one another. The negative influence of the peers has been highlighted a lot more but the positive influence does its part too. Motor and cognitive growth are dependent on how kids indulge in group activities. It is not only about development, staying in a group is refreshing and entertaining for the kids too. It enhances their interest to take part in different kinds of activities according to the different interests of peers. Parents should never fear peer pressure. In fact, with the right guidance friendship is one of the most important aspects of a human’s life. Parents can guide their children and make them understand the fine difference between learning from peers and peer pressure. Preschools promote group activities because of the quality of learning it brings.

Let us discuss some positive consequences that peers might bring into your child’s life

Developing Socially

Staying with peers enhances the social development of a child. It is as crucial as any lesson that a child can have. Without being social, your child would not be able to sustain a spot among the crowd. Communicating and learning go hand in hand, without communication there won’t be a learning experience for your child. The more they will communicate, the more point of view they will face and then they can adjust to their interests and develop in the right ways. Their social development determines their confidence, fluency in communication, and leads to several other kills that are necessary for attaining success. Kids schools work on such skills from the base in a group and kids can learn from their peers a lot.

Developing Emotionally

Friendship is the first experience for kids outside their home that hits them emotionally. However, every individual is born with that emotion inside them but having peers around helps in igniting those emotions in a person. The kid experiences emotions like joy, anger, happiness, and bonding which is very much essential for a human. The bond enables building relationships and thus enhancing learning. Even fighting is a learning experience to an extent as it makes a child learn how they can tackle situations and manage different kinds of situations. Emotional development acts well in the mental and overall growth as well. The child acts as per the relationships with their parents, teachers, and friends and learns in a best-suited way with each one of them.

The Cognitive Development

Cognitive development is all about thinking and reasoning and anyone would think to their limits when they are mentally free. A child is in the comfort zone with his/her peer and shares thoughts, ideas, and different kinds of perspectives. When many children get indulged in some group activities, the different prospects, views bring a lot of learning to each one of them. Even the conflicts are decent in farming opinions and giving new angles to their thinking. Children who present their view and start thinking about ways to get through a problem have developed their cognition to good effect. The kids’ school culture is doing wonders by giving the right activities that make a child learn in a group.

The Physical Development

Games and activities have the biggest role in the physical development of a child. The outdoor games which are played in a group enforce the child to do well and be physically active. Peers give motivation to the child to compete and become a better version of him/herself. Physical development is not only about strong and fit bodies, the activities allow a person to be flexible and stay healthy from within for a longer period. All of this is possible when an individual creates strong relationships with peers around and learns a lot from them, no matter however they can but make them learn from the peers regularly.

Communication is a vital ingredient of one’s life and we learn the basics of it in our childhood. Children have their ways and age of developing and speaking skills are built according to it. Sometimes, kids experience some delay in the development of their speaking skills. Such issues are very much concerning for the parents as they don’t want their child to fall behind other kids. But, the truth is that it is natural for some kids that their skills might develop a bit late. Parents need no to worry about that thing, but they can surely make efforts to encourage every skill of the child. However, taking too much might be problematic and you would require some medical assistance before it turns worse for the kid.

There can be slow oral-motor development in your child but you still should consult a doctor, if you find a problem with the process.

Here are a few reasons that might be causing delays in the speech and language development of your child.

  • Any oral defacement that has stopped the development of the tongue and mouth palate.
  • Any disability that leads to slow movement of the tongue
  • Hearing issues also lead to problems in speaking. Audiologists can check and provide decent support in such a case.

Finding the right preschool at the right time is also an important characteristic to foster speaking habits within your child.

What can parents do?

The medical deformities are not in control of parents but if the growth is slow then some activities can add to the process. Parents can arrange certain activities, or practice certain habits to have better transformation in speaking. Even the preschools work on the process and give kids the right atmosphere to enhance their speaking capabilities.

Here are some common practices for the parents:

Encourage communication from your end

You must regularly try and communicate to the kid with words along with gestures. No matter whether the kid responds or not when you utter words then he/she will develop a tendency to speak. Parents make sounds that attract the attention of a kid and those sounds are responsible for the major growth of the hearing and speaking skills of a child. Even nursery schools practice such activities that involve various sounds to enhance oratory growth.

Read before your child

You should start reading in front of the child when he/she is a baby. Make sure that reading is age-appropriate and involves some sounds and words that are easy. Include books that contain catch images and read the context related to it loud and clear in front of your child. Such practices leave a mark on the developing brain of the kid and repetition of such activities becomes the base for proper growth of the brain and related organs.

Utilize everything around you

The day-to-day activities are capable of teaching a lot of things to a kid. You can talk the day through to your kid and make them learn new things every day. It can be anything like groceries, vegetables, fruits. Humans are born with the tendency to speak, you just need to polish the skill completely for a good result. The better you will teach and involve the child, the better will be the result of his/her communication and linguistic skills. Make sure you avoid the baby talk like most of the parents do. They find it cute but it is not encouraging for the child. Don’t be too fancy or even strict, just try to keep it simple and you will get results for sure.

The best way to deal with issues of delay is to recognize them as soon as possible and treat them accordingly. The concerns should be put up in front of a doctor before it gets late. Note that don’t be in a hurry to teach speaking too early to your kid. Everything needs time and your child deserves that time to grow properly. However, including some interactive activities is never bad and such practices should be promoted.

Crying for children is a normal thing, especially for toddlers who are not capable of speaking fluently or communicating feelings to their parents. It is frustrating for the parents, especially when they don’t’ know the reason for the wipe. It can be hard but being parents, you should know that parenting is all about taking responsibility and enjoying each action with your child. Kids who are learning to speak can’t convey the reasons making it a challenge for the parents. But, even when the kid starts the verbal expression it can be tricky to understand the reason for the adults as the kids have their own opinions and ways to look at things. Sometimes, you should let your kid cry their heart out but on other days if it is too much you should get serious and do something about it. Above all, you should do you bit to know the reason and take some actions according to it.

To know the reasons for your kid crying, you can take references from the following pointers

Your Child needs feeding

The basic thing a child wants is food or mother’s milk. If the child is grown enough to be in a preschool, still he/she might not be able to communicate facts. Food can work wonderfully well to calm down a crying child. Kids don’t eat much but require some feeding in three to four hours. Even if the child is not saying to eat, your feeding can relax him and make a crying child quiet. Even the preschoolers have the tendency of hesitating in asking for food, but the preschools know it better. They know that a happy stomach would lead to better activities and learning for the kid.

Your Child is too busy

When kids start their schooling, they undergo a lot of changes, socially, mentally, and physically as well. Change is never easy to adapt to when you are that young. The busy schedule might get disturbing and the child wouldn’t be aware of it because of the lack of awareness. The activities and work at a school will be tiring in the beginning and homework, playing and home schedule would turn into a mess. The parents need to analyze and understand on their behalf how much load is suitable for the kid. The reason is never directly visible, you would have to seek options and help your child through numerous ways.

Your Child is Stressed

Children are too young to understand the term stress, but humans experience that term from their birth. The anxiety that going away from the parents gives, might be stressful for the child. The kid again would not have an idea what he/she is going through. You should regularly communicate and try to take out the feelings that lie within your child. There can be different kinds of stress, like adapting to the change, or behavior of others around the kid, etc. That is the reason why preschools keep it easy for the kid in the beginning and offer joyful activities that relieve the child regularly. If your kid is not ready for preschool, look for reasons that are stressful and try to keep him/her away from such things as much as possible.

Your child wants attention or a change

When kids are attached to you they want your attention all the time. Toddlers are smart enough to know that crying is the best way to rag attention towards them. They might need you to play with them or they might not want you to go away. Also, when a kid is tired of a toy or a place then he/she starts crying. It is a signal that a change is needed. This is some healthy and cute crying but make sure you change it as soon as possible before it turns into a habit. Such a habit would be concerning going ahead and the child would get stubborn too. The preschoolers who develop such habits offer difficulties to the parents as they don’t want to be away from them.

Preschools are the development platforms for children that not only develop their intelligence or academic skills but are responsible for building some core values and lessons that stay with them throughout their life. The life lessons children learn help in their character building and a strong base for their lives that lie ahead of them. Kids spend a major part of their learning phase at school. From early childhood to almost becoming an adult, that is the time when a person has the sharpest learning and grasping abilities. Children don’t realize the importance of it while living the time but the habits and values they learn and experience at a school reflect in their personality and lifestyle throughout life.

The following qualities become Life Lessons that children can learn early with the help and teachings from school.

Staying Honest

We regularly listen to quotes that tell us to be honest and advocate the importance of being honest in our lives but do the quotes affect our minds? The actions or an experience that your kids undergo during preschool time makes the habit of being honest. There are different angles to it, starting with staying honest with oneself and then towards their actions and then others like teachers, friends, etc. Once a child inherits the quality in him/her, it stays with them throughout life and eventually this is a virtue that helps them in leading a successful and quality life. Honesty is one of the first virtues that will be taught to students at a nursery school.

Generating New Ideas or Innovation

Children are fresh minds and everyone expects them to think differently on a topic than the existing ideas. Those children are the result of the treatment they receive at a kids’ school. Kids not only learn the answers to questions that they don’t know but find new and innovative ways to find their answers. Especially with the modern technologies taking new shapes every day, children need to be ready with innovations and ideas. The learning that helps in evolving the thinking skills of a child begins at the basic levels. The preschools are responsible for framing curriculum and activities that not only develop academics but help a child in developing cognitive abilities. Parents can play an important role in the idea generation powers of their kids by raising relevant and interesting questions to them.

Self-Respect and respecting others

The characteristics of a person’s life hugely depend on their morals and values that build up the personality. Honoring someone with their words and actions are some basic morals and lessons that children learn at school. Before that, a child should value their decisions and learn the power of self-respect. The lessons at a school are not just fictional; the practical lessons build opinions and are a huge part of the mental growth of a child. The moral and values of respectfulness reflect in the functioning of a child while studying, giving answers, communicating, and thus evolving as a student and person. This aspect of life is taught vastly in the middle schools but the base is created at a preschool.

Teamwork

A universal truth of our lives is that we live in a society and are a part of it. Wherever we go we will have to communicate, coordinate, and be united with the people that are around us. Kids learn and adapt the qualities in them during the building phase and it is the right time to teach them too, as once they grow older they already have habits and lifestyles to live. Teamwork is an ingredient that makes life smoother and easier. From schools to working culture one needs to work with a team and coordinate to emerge as a successful person.

Leadership

Leadership is a quality that everyone wants to adopt. Every parent wants their child to be a leader in whichever field they go. This quality develops in a student when he/she is actively involved in the activities and competitions that happen at a kids’ school. No matter if you are a leader or not but the quality of leadership helps the child at different phases of life, they can take decisions and lead their life towards success.

Anything you learn during your childhood has more chances of staying with you throughout your life. Nutrition and exercising are two of the basic yet crucial aspects of an individual’s life. Health is the foremost thing everyone should consider for themselves. Parents are responsible for making a child learn these habits from childhood. It helps a child develop to his/her full potential and gives them positive vibes that help in the study and learning as well. Toddlers require extra care and their nutrition determines how well they will behave at their school. Also, the exercise they do determine their motor and cognitive growth which is very much essential during the early years of life. Talking of nutrition, it is not only about what you are giving to your kid to eat. The eating patterns are also as important as the former one. Preschools that are dedicated to kids’ growth focus on such things but it is the parents who can make sure that the kid is having enough nutrients to be the best version of themselves.

We all are aware of rich nutrients that need inclusion in our diet, it stays the same way for the kids as well. Like, they too need adequate vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. You can consult a kid dietician if you are not aware of the adequate quantity. But, along with that, you need to make sure that the following pointers are included in your routine as they can do wonders when mixed with the nutrients consuming process of your kid.

  • The environment where the kid is eating adds to the food, believe it or not. The kid knows his/her routine and if the parents are having lunch or dinner alongside, the diet automatically enhances. As parents, make sure you have a neat, clean, and friendly environment while eating with your kid.
  • A lot of sugar is concerning for parents but you need to make sure that you do not ban the sugar for your kid. Telling him to stay away from chocolates and sweets would create more cravings. Just try to limit the supply but don’t ban it, let the kid taste what he/she wants sometimes.
  • We know that meals don’t comprise fruits but make sure you have a separate schedule for offering fresh fruits to your children. It is compulsory to gain some minerals and proteins through fresh fruits as it brings along some positive energy. Even the nursery schools offer fruits regularly to the kids.
  • Kids hate veggies, especially the green ones. But we know how much nutrients those veggies carry. You can hide veggies in the meals of your children. By hiding, it doesn’t mean you need to put it in a chapati, it means you can shred or grate the vegetables and serve it in the form of sandwiches or any dish that tastes well to children.
  • Instead of focusing on special foods and nutrients, you should try to focus on the overall diet of the kid. For example, it doesn’t matter in what form the minerals your child intakes, it is important to consume a particular amount in a day. So focus on that.
  • It is very important that you don’t force a child to eat. It can have a negative impact on the child and can take their interest away from eating. At the same time, it is important that you don’t waste food, therefore, you should know what your kid likes and what amount he/she can intake.
  • Do make sure that whenever the kid is eating, he/she should have all the focus on the meal. Avoid practices like watching television while eating. Kids learn the art of concentrating at a preschool, parents can help the cause by adding inputs like these to it.

Focusing on physical activities and exercises promotes healthy growth and development. You should encourage your child to be on the ground or take part in activities like swimming, cycling, running, etc. It gives them confidence and helps in maintaining adequate body weight as well. Toddlers have certain different physical activities in the beginning according to their capabilities. Most of them focus on their motor development during the early days.

School is the place that teaches various aspects to children but parents are the one who helps them through their journey of life. Every parent is caring and looks to monitor the building phase of their child. Yes, school is indeed a place to learn but so is the home of the child. Parents are the first teachers of a child and schooling begins at home. There are elements at your home that make children better at school too. Parents should always consider learning at home as a part of the overall development of a child. There are several healthy habits and positive vibes that children carry from their homes only. This is a huge part for a child in learning and behaving at a school. The combination of learning at home and school takes the kid in a way that leads towards success. Here are some elements that a parent should look after at home and school for the success of their child.

Well Planned Daily Routine

Discipline is an ingredient that you cannot neglect wherever you go. You need discipline in life not just for yourself but for everything you are involved with. Getting disciplined with your daily routine and your kid’s daily routine will make you feel relaxed and ready to have some time for yourself. It makes everything well organized and is stable for your mind too. There is a proper template to follow throughout the day when a kid is going to school, not just the kid but for the parent too. From getting dressed to having breakfast everything needs management and discipline. If you stick to a routine your child will understand how to manage time and nothing will feel hectic for him/her. This will make the day better and the school time worth learning and exploring new things. Your mornings play a huge part in framing your whole day. So make sure you give it your best shot in keeping it clear and disciplined for you and your kid’s healthy and happening time.

Interacting Frequently

Your kid needs and deserves your time more than anyone or anything. He/she is in the age of learning and even your words can have a great impact on their mind. Children need to convey their feelings especially if it is something emotional or mental. As a child, they might hesitate if you are not in regular conversations. This reflects in their behavior at school too, and as a result in their learning habits. For example, it can affect their communication skills and they might hesitate in raising questions to their teachers. Appreciate them when they achieve little things and motivate them regularly to achieve more. You should understand how much words matter when it comes from the right person.

Teach your Child from little things around

Learning for a child is everywhere. Infants start learning as soon as they see things, similarly, every child can learn from things that you are doing throughout your day. Children can learn Maths, Science, English, and most important moral values from parents’ actions and work at home. For example, you can make them read or tell them stories of different personalities or play games with them that polish their mental skills, or even when you are cooking you can teach them about the process of cooking which includes science. Most importantly, it builds their thinking power and develops common sense which is necessary to face the world outside your home. It is natural to develop the basic skills while being in school and parents need to bear equal responsibilities for that.

Expect but don’t Demand success

We have always heard that parents should never build pressure on a child of unnecessary expectations but it is equally important to make your kid understand the powers and capabilities he/she holds. Sometimes you should talk about the plans and guide a child to make him push to the limits. This also helps in boosting the confidence of the child and he/she will be happier with the success that they will accomplish.

Every parent wants their kid to be active in learning and try different ways to make them better at it. With modern technology on top, it has become easier and effective for parents. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have to put any effort into making the learning experience better. There are several ways by which parents can inculcate learning habits and help the child in their cognitive development.

As we know the classroom is a dynamic environment, bringing together students from different backgrounds and personalities. An effective parent will want creative and innovative teaching strategies to implement in the classroom to meet students’ individual needs. This is the reason why parents select a preschool for their children during early childhood. But, at home, you can consider the following practices and try to make it a habit for your kid.

Visualization: If parents bring dull academic concepts to life with visual and practical learning experiences, it helps children in a much better way to understand how their schooling applies in the real world.

Using the interactive spaces at your home to display photos, audio clips, and videos can encourage children to get out of the boring learning experiments and give them refreshing ways to be better at learning.

Cooperative learning: To work together by promoting small group activities encourages children of mixed abilities. Through verbally expressing their ideas and responding to others your child will develop self-confidence, as well as enhance their communication and critical thinking skills which are vital throughout their life. Solving mathematical puzzles, conducting scientific experiments, and acting out short drama are some examples of how cooperative learning can be incorporated into their lessons. Nursery school techniques are common these days and parents adopt them at their homes as well. You can look for these activities at your child’s preschool at then replicate them at your home for better functioning and understanding.

Inquiry-based instruction: Encouraging children to ask questions and investigate their ideas helps improve their problem-solving skills as well as gain a deeper understanding of academic concepts. Both of which are important life skills.

Inquiries can be Science or Math-based such as ‘why does my shadow change its size?’ or ‘is the sum of two odd numbers always an even number? However, these questions can also be subjective and encourage children to express their unique views, like, ‘do poems always rhyme?’ or ‘why should all the students wear uniforms?’

Differentiation: Differentiate your parenting by distributing tasks based on your child’s abilities, to make sure no activity is left behind. Parents should organize activities for children according to their needs and never look for perfection in the performances. It would mean that other children with higher academic capabilities are taken into consideration. Every child should get the appropriate support no matter whether he is good at something or struggling in it. Overall, you should differentiate the tasks, not the children. Their abilities could be differentiated but they shouldn’t be. You can take examples from any preschool where there are children with different abilities but are treated the same.

Technology at your home: To include technology in your parenting methods is a great way to engage children, as digital media commonly surrounds young people in the 21st century.

Interactive tools can be used to display images and videos, which help children visualize academic concepts clearly. Learning becomes more interactive when technology is used as children can physically engage themselves during lessons as well as right away research their ideas, which develops autonomy. It is not a surprise that every school has inculcated the technology in their teaching methods and if you’ll use it at home as well, then the child would become more familiar with the process and would understand better.

Behavior management: An effective behavior management strategy is critical to gain your child’s respect and ensure students have an equal chance of reaching their full potential. Noisy, disturbing spaces do not encourage a productive learning environment, therefore developing an atmosphere of mutual respect through a combination of discipline and reward can be beneficial for both parents and the child.

Kids need to have some creative writing skills so that they can express their emotions and exhibit their real selves. For making it work, parents require age-appropriate, level-wise, and class-wise activities planned for the children. If you are a parent who wishes that your kids should write in a fluent and proper manner or should think deeply about various topics, several activities and processes might help you. Parents can help children by guiding them on how to visualize and make choices when working with ideas. Teachers must introduce students to the process of generating and sorting ideas by letting them know how to use resources to build ideas. Kids’ schools are known to do such jobs and that is the reason why parents enroll their children in such schools.

Brainstorming

For great writing, brainstorming is necessary. In order to write something, kids need ways to move from the basic knowledge of the resource material to some separate, more conceptualized, or sophisticated understanding of the topic to write on. The thinking capabilities are often furthered through class discussion and some students automatically move from this initial distribution of ideas into complex, logical interpretations. The process helps them understand the writing styles and they create interesting creative writing habits. But, for the majority of kids, their thinking will remain an unarranged, blank set of ideas of the subject. Here, parents’ and teachers’ intervention is necessary which gives their ideas a solid shape. Teachers can foster a deeper understanding by providing opportunities to kids so that they externalize and fix their ideas on paper and also see their ideas fostering relationships between them too. Make use of these ideas to master the brainstorming stage. But before that, the basic formations of numbers and letters are being shaped by the preschools. The teachers play the major role but parents should be equally involved.

Organize the thought

Once kids start writing something and have something written on the page to work with, they can begin the decision-making process which is crucial to develop a coherent written idea. At this point, kids can choose which ideas are most appealing to them, which ideas seem to fit together, which ideas need to be rejected and which ideas need further exploration. Make use of such ideas to master the ‘organize the thought’ stage within the child. It is important to activate such skills at the right time and the nursery school stage is the best fit for it. Any such school which focuses on child development would try and make it a habit for the child and thus, it will improve the writing skills of a child.

Firstly, Draft the written piece

As students start working with their writing ideas, they also start making a series of choices about their ideas that shall make them feel ready to put them in a more complete form. They should feel “ready to write” their ideas in paper form. But for most, the tough moments of real writing begin at this point. They may still feel that they “have ideas” but have trouble in writing them down on the page. Some kids will suddenly be thrust into “writing a paper” mode and be both constrained and guided by their assumptions about who the reader is, what topic writing really is, and what prior experience has taught them about writing exercises/ assignments. These drafting exercises may ease your kid’s entry into shaping their ideas for a writing assignment.

Make them revise the writing

Ask kids to use simple alphabets or numbers to shape ideas so that they begin to feel the need to test their ideas or move beyond their comfort zones. Sometimes we have ideas that make good sense to us but such ideas might lose or confuse the readers in case we do not frame the thought correctly. Remind students that ideas don’t exist in isolation from words but exist in the words themselves. This organization and choice of words depend upon the audience who is going to ultimately read or listen to the piece of creative writing. Preschools have this habit of making kids revise the written part, again and again, to make them better.

Parent and teacher engagement is not beneficial only for the kids but for parents and teachers themselves. Knowledge of a kid’s family life can also help teachers in preparing lessons that better fit with children’s needs or interact more efficiently with families and since students receive more support from their parents they perform better in school. Everyone wins when parents and teachers team up. Parent engagement also helps in decreasing chronic absenteeism or missing school more than twenty days a year. For example, when teachers visit students’ homes to engage with parents the students’ absences drop by 20%. Students whose parents engage with teachers report fewer days of school missed overall. Especially, the preschools need to make this a habit.

There are several ways to enhance engagement. Below listed are some of them

Make sure parents and teachers both feel listened to

Teachers must take the lead and be flexible and approachable to parents. They should sit down with the parents and have a serious and productive conversation with them. Teachers should be willing to listen to the parents too. No technology can replace this traditional face-to-face parent-teacher talk. This should be focused on the children and their behavior at home and at school should be exchanged with each other. This helps both teachers and parents to understand the missing factor in the child’s growth. It is the school’s responsibility to organize this parents-teachers meeting.

Teachers should send Postcards to Students Home

When the students achieve something good in school or do a good piece of work, teachers can send a stamped postcard to the kid’s home. This old-fashioned touch will keep reminding them of their good work and parents will also get to know about their kids’ accomplishments. The students will try to keep doing good work to receive more and more postcards. Preschools are known for such smart activities.

Parents and Teachers should exchange feedbacks

Parents often give feedback and helpful ideas to the teachers about their children’s behavior at home and they want the teachers to take care of their behavioral issues but many times the teachers listen to them but do not close the feedback loop and nor take their ideas on board. They should act upon their feedback and ideas and respond to them positively. This way both teachers and parents can together take care of children’s behavior at home and school.

Teachers should guide Parents to assist kids in their homework

Most parents are keen to assist their kids in doing homework but do not understand the techniques to get the homework done. Teachers can help the parents with guidelines to help the kids with their homework. When the parents would know what has to be done by the kids, they can make the kids do the same. Teachers can describe the homework clearly in the kid’s diaries or broadcast it as text messages to the parents directly. With modern technology, schools send emails and messages to the parents.

Use Social media to engage

This way, without individually conversing with anybody, teachers and parents can communicate at once. Teachers can keep an eye on their student’s activities on social media and engage with parents as well.

Invite Parents to Speak at School

School Management often invites distinguished personalities at schools to speak in the assembly to motivate the kids. Why can’t they invite parents to speak for the kids? There must be so many parents who might be doing very well in their respective fields. Teachers can ask them to volunteer and address the kids and management as well. Every parent has some story to share and teachers should encourage them to tell it to the school. This increases parents’ engagement in school and also motivates the kids. A decent preschool always organizes such activities.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Help

The teachers have to educate the student but it is the parents’ responsibility to raise the child. Both are interdependent and need each other’s help. So, teachers and parents should not refrain from asking for help from each other. It is a mutual process and hence both should come together to let the children blossom fully.

We can use thinking routines to teach students to make their ideas visible and accessible. It can be done by using a variety of graphics that help structure ideation and reasoning. They are very simple to use yet very impactful. Parents support the development of thinking routines at home because one of the benefits for parents in using visible thinking routines is that they can see learning through the eyes of children.

Let us discuss some of the good thinking routines that you can use at your home along with the classrooms of your kid. Here, we are mentioning some activities that you can organize for your child at home often.

See Think Wonder

It is very simple, when students see something, they start to think about that and wonder about the process related to it. The curiosity in children can be ignited by using a simple object, picture, video, or artwork. This works as a great introductory thinking routine. After showing something related to the subject or lesson to the children, you can ask them to write down and share their observations with you. They will then decide what they think about their observations of what is happening or being represented? You have to encourage the child to support their thinking with reasons and also prompt them to wonder what else might be happening or have happened within or outside the shown stuff.

Peel the Fruit

In Peel the Fruit thinking routine, children are encouraged to ‘peel’ back the layers of the issue. They then move on to the substance of the deeper issue until finally, you ask them to evaluate the issue at the core. A variety of statements, images, and questions can be shared with the students throughout a lesson. They can be consistently asked to return to the ‘Peel the Fruit’ image to assist them with showing their learning and understanding any complex issue. Once they are done with the complete task, you can ask them to graph their answer to the original question and reflect on any changes to their original opinion. Such activities are arranged for the brainstorming of kids.

Question Organizer

Question Organizer thinking routine is a visual information organizer with spaces for questions such as when, why, who, where, and how. For example, you can teach the students Celebrations and Commemorations from History subject that focuses on cultural celebrations and commemorations around the world. You can divide children into small groups and each group member chooses a different celebration or commemoration to research.

Three-Two-One Bridge Organizer

The three-two-one bridge organizer thinking routine is used to record initial thoughts, ideas, questions, and understandings about a given concept. Once you have taught the concept or shown a video to the children, you can ask them to rethink their initial opinions after learning more about the topic. The objective is to build bridges between ideas when new information is obtained. You have to make children focus on the idea of understanding and connecting their thinking and ideas.

Kids Schools adopt such teaching methods and make children better at their thinking.

Six Thinking Hats

In six thinking hats, students are expected to look at things from different points of view. It helps them develop decision-making and creativity in the thinking skills of students. They can put on a hat to see things from a different point of view. It can be different colored hats to make it more engaging. Parents need to tell kids that they need to think in different ways with each hat on.

Think Pair Share

In a think pair share thinking routine, students are suggested to think about a question and discuss their answer with a partner. This is a very simple routine that can be practiced daily in a classroom or even at home with some kids. It can be utilized whenever there are posing questions that might require deep thinking. Teachers use this activity to boost the confidence and thinking of children in a group.

Venn Diagram

We all are aware of Venn diagrams. These are used to compare two or more things and to depict both their similarities and differences. A Venn diagram is usually made up of two or more circles or figures that overlap. In the outer circles, the differences are recorded and within the overlapping section, the similarities are recorded. By using this routine, you can ask the students to compare and contrast ideas for a greater understanding.
