Many students struggle with writing skills, building their interest and making it easier. It is beneficial to bring letters and words to the child. It is important to encourage your child’s writing, all you need to do is to add some fun while learning and practicing. The best way is to sneak learning into play. For some students, writing might not come naturally to them but can be brought to them eventually. Parents can ensure that they motivate their toddlers to write with several games.

To provide your child with the right frame of mind to love creative writing, here are some fun learning activities:-

  1. Building letters with yarn
Building letters with yarn

To arouse enthusiasm in children for writing skills, parents can help their kid trace and learn through yarn activities. Take a piece of paper and draw any letter in larger than usual size. Put glue in the letter and help the child to put the yarn on the letter. This way, your child learns the letters easily and will encourage your child’s writing.

2. Shaving cream

To make a child follow the instructions, it is very important for parents to set their child free in order to analyze them.

Similarly, to encourage your child’s writing, it is fairly important to understand how a child is perceiving letters and their formation.

Playing with shaving foam can help parents attain this. Take a big-sized plate and fill it with shaving foam.

Parents should draw letters on paper and simultaneously allow the child to draw the same in shaving foam with their hands. This will help to develop a child’s interest in writing skills.

Shaving cream

3. Play-doh

Rolling, sculpting, modeling………children love to play with Play-Doh. Adding some props with Play-Doh makes it the most powerful way to encourage your child’s writing. Play-doh also improves a child’s language development, handwriting, science, and maths skills. It can provide hours of fun and learning at home. Play-doh helps to develop manipulation through fingers and enables a fun way of letter formation.

4. Lego blocks

Kids can never get enough of playing with blocks. Then why not use them creatively? To encourage your child’s writing, start teaching them by making letters with blocks. This will attract and encourage children to learn and write letters.

Lego blocks

5. Make an “I can” book

It is extremely important that a toddler’s handwriting should be neat. To improve writing skills and to make it fun-worthy for a toddler to write, parents should help them make an “I Can” book. This book will ensure that the child writes about all his little accomplishments. This will help to develop pencil grips in kids.

To make this book, take a bunch of 12-14 papers and staple them together. As soon as the child reaches a new milestone like that of tying shoelaces, they can write the same in the book with good pencil grips.

Conclusion

Writing doesn’t always start with pencil, pen, and paper, rather it begins with a creative idea. It is important to first accept the range of development of your child and then build an environment that supports the skills of the child to encourage your child’s writing.

How this Rakhi will be different for kids?

Rakshabandhan is an Indian Festival to celebrate the innate bond between brothers and sisters. This time, Rakshabandhan will redefine itself. At one hand where brothers and sisters had been together in the COVID-19 lockdown, each one will have a special Rakhi celebration. On the other hand, there might be some who will be a part of essential service providers or have work that shall not allow them to be at home or with their sisters this Rakshabandhan. Still, this Rakhi is going to be special. Special in the way how brothers shall create Rakhi gifts in a time where they have to avoid stepping out to purchase gifts. It will be special for sisters in the way of how they replace chocolates and sweets bought from the market with the home maderelishingkheer, laddoos, burfi or ‘chashni’ dipped jalebis. Here are a few ways in which Rakhi can be made unforgettable with numerous ways of bonding. Here are a few things brothers and sisters individually can do to make each other feel special:

  1. Make handmade cards

Both brothers and sisters can make handmade cards with all the material that they have at home. Try expressing your feeling for your brother/sister in every space of that Rakhi greeting. This shall touch their hearts deeper than what a bought from market card will ever do.

  1. Make or bake delicacies

This Rakshabandhan, sisters may cook. Kids can cook recipes with the help of their mothers. Make your sibling’s favorite sweets this festive season and see them enjoy every bite of it. Bake cakes, make burfis or coconut laddoos. Pick tasty yet easy to make recipes.

  1. Make handmade gifts

Handmade gifts always remain close to the heart. What if you couldn’t but a dress for your brother/ sister? Alongwith the card, show some creativity and prepare a handmade gift like a wind chime, CD art, painting or simply design a photo frame and put your sibling’s picture inside that.

  1. Arrange home dine-in

This time, although restaurants in many regions are opening, we still should keep safe and try staying at home as far as possible. But, you might also be missing out on dining in with your siblings, especially on the Rakhi eve. You may have some fun here by making any favorite dish you both enjoy. Sit on a dining table and chit chat while you grab your fav meals.

What to do if you are posting a Rakhi?

Sisters who might not be able to meet their brothers this Rakshabandhan can write a letter to their brothers. Although, in this era of mails and messages, we have been more connected on the social networking apps. But, a handwritten letter does the actual talking and is always more expressive.

Be keen and find ways to make this Rakhi all the more special despite restrictions arising out of COVID-19 outbreak. Bachpan Play School always teaches kids to stick to their roots while balancing with the immediate environment. We are also in touch with our kids and teachers for maintaining continuity in learning processes so, we know how kids are celebrating festivals differently at home this time. Bachpan also encourages kids to do craft and participate in activities which are taught to them in virtual classrooms.

Participate in our Rakshabandhan Contest starting soon on all our Social Media handles (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter &PriPrefect App) and win exciting gifts for your little one.

Again, Happy Rakshabandhan folks!

home with kids during quarantine

In this period when everyone is at home, there are a lot of chances that lying in bed is the only things your kids might be doing. This scenario will not reap very charming results and thus, we as parents need to check that whether they are fully and most interestingly using the Home Quarantine. Using the home quarantine does not mean a day long study hour. Effective home quarantine strategy should be a careful mix of everything which doesn’t make your child to shift to boredom. Also, a routine also does not mean that it has to be strictly followed even if not loved by your kids. I came across a quote which said that:

“THIS QUARANTINE, IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO LEARN A NEW SKILL OR PRACTISE SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO, YOU NEVER LACKED TIME, YOU LACKED DISCIPLINE”

  • Try new recipes

Cakes, muffins, rolls, patties and much more. Kids are in love with this food. There are ample tutorials which you can see online and seek your child’s help in trying new recipes. This way, the child will get engrossed and will learn about various kinds of ingredients.

  • Try making masks

The social media is flooded with DIY crafts on making face masks with material at home. You can make colourful masks with your child and seek help in cutting the cloth, tying knots and much more. This is the need based activity and you can easily make one good mask each day.

  • Complete the study/ assignment part

It is important that the touch from whatever the child has already learnt is not broken. If they are attending an online class, well and good. If need be, you can download various worksheets and get them solving some.

  • Try your hand at DIY craft

Painting a diya, making a pen stand, Best out of waste are some DIY crafts which you can try with the child. Watch tutorials and use waste CDs to paint them all. You never know you might see a new talent resting quietly inside your little one.

  • Do a lot of exercise

Exercise and yoga is not just for the grown-ups. Kids have a body at development stage and it is very important to keep their body flexibility maintained specially when they can’t really step out to play. Reserve a morning or evening exercise/ yoga time with your child.

  • Practice storytelling

Expression is an important trait in a child which should be taught if the child does not possess it. It involves a lot of effort, face expressions, hand gestures to explain a story. You can ask your child to narrate one story with expression. Help them if they get stuck anywhere.

  • Watch educational channels on YouTube

There are ample educational channels on YouTube. If you have not subscribed to them yet, you may do so now. This will enable a child to self-learn while you are bust with the household chores.

  • Get digitally sound

This is also a good time to let your child sit with you and learn basic computer skills. They must know how to switch on a system. Create and save a file and anything alike which you can teach them. This will make them tech savvy by the time lockdown ends.

  • Chalk out your favourite activities

While you are trying everything with your child, you may align these activities to be everyday’splan in future. You may chalk out what your child loves to do and does not love to do and you may act accordingly.

  • Learn about new things such as first aid and disaster management techniques

There are various things such as basic first aid and disaster management techniques which you as parent can teach them. Seek information from the internet and tell them, how to clean a wound, put a band-aid, do not panic in an emergency situation and much more.

This is majorly not a rule guide as to what a routine should be like. Consider this as a guide book with alternative options available for you to have fun and learn something with your kids. You can add much more interesting things in this list and also recommend others in doing that.

Stay Home, Stay Safe & most importantly Save Lives!

A woman is miraculous in her own way.

No matter what may come, she stands beside sacrificing her own hay!

Women's-Day-Image

A woman is more important in every way than we ever realize or more than we are ever made to realize and respect her worth. Every March 8, we share posts that connote and denote respect for women which include your mother, wife and sisters. Is that enough? Do we have no more added responsibility to give her days of happiness?

Let’s find answers to all these questions in this piece of writing!

Misha, resident of Uttarakhand, is the only sister to her little brother 10 years younger to him. She loves her brother dearly and have raised him up more like a mother. Her brother is a grown up boy now and has left for hostel. There is nobody in the house who misses the little brother more than Misha. She waits for months to have his brother back in hometown. She wants to talk to him daily and let her brother know how much concerned she is about his safety. What do you think is going on in her life? Does the brother call and speak to her daily or she keeps waiting to hear her brother’s voice. Unfortunately, the latter one is true. Still, she rejoices when her brother is to arrive and have no complaints. That’s the beauty of what a sister holds in her heart for her brother. Tribute to their love and much felt love! Aren’t you proud of Misha’s selfless love? I certainly am!

Wife: a word that in itself has support. Have you ever realized that wives too, at times, can be cranky like little babies out there. Mrs. Majumdar from Bangalore works for a ISRO and is a great scientist. She winds up all her work in the morning by 8 a.m. and rushes to office. Before office, she prepares three different meals and does all her work meticulously. She has two children, a loving husband and father in law residing with her. Even reaching home by 10 at the night, she never fails to smile and talk to her family and discuss how all of them spent their day. Her entirely family supports and never fails to appreciate what she does for the family each day by going a mile extra. Not just this, the happiest moment for Mrs. Majumdar is that her husband chops and keeps the vegetables ready in the refrigerator which she has to cook in the morning. Do you think it is a small gesture? No! That’s a real big one for a man to do this when we live in a society that has preempted conceptions.

A flamboyant lawyer by profession, Samantha from Kolkata, has never lost even a single court case. She had her career at the peak when she was 30. Here was a life to take a major and a beautiful turn. She was blessed with a baby boy. She has done away with her career as a lawyer. You would think why? She would have easily continued. Yes! She easily could have only if everything was in a happy state of affairs. Her baby is now 5 and suffers from a major dyslexia. Disheartening! Yet, she has taken up this as a challenge and gives all the 24 hours of her day to the baby. She takes up the challenge of treating her baby and is also succeeding with small steps. Mother: an epitome of warmth and care is something which cannot be replaced. Her love is pure and virgin. We salute Samantha and wish that this motherly mission be more brighter than her career as an advocate.

We have so far discussed about Misha, Mrs. Majumdar and Samantha. Did we find our own story hidden somewhere here? If not, you are a step away from feeling more abreast with the ‘Womaniya Power’ but I hope you come across to it soon.

Till then, keep celebrating ‘Womanship‘ and never forget to say ‘Thank You to women who motivate you each day to wake up with a smile.

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY!

Super Motivational things a parent can do for their child

Motivational Things to do by Parents

Parents have the greatest power to groom their kids in a manner so that they lead their entire life with gaiety and with confidence. Let’s talk about what are the major 4 domains in which parents need to role model/ exhibit exactly what they wish their kids to learn.

1. Be a role model

You are already a role model for your little child. Every time you do or say something, take any action or pose a reaction towards something, always remember that the child is observing your behavior at all these times. As infants, this is how children gain language skills and eventually develop fluency to talk. A preschoolers depends their learning upon observation as they begin to understand and put on test the workings of interpersonal relationships. Even teenagers—although you might not believe it!—are listening to your words and observing your actions very solemnly, examining how are you handling situations from personal relationships to professional work life balance.

2. Own and accept mistakes

Admitting a mistake is difficult and that too when you know that your child is watching. There are a lot of unknown consequence which have to thought of. This could also impact your relationship with your child. But, remember, being a role model doesn’t mean that you as a parent do not own up for a mistake. Sometimes, it seems easier to avoid the issue completely than to admit any fault. Never let that happen and think that the child doesn’t know. Children are watchful more than adults. Allow yourself and your kids to make mistakes and call them a learning opportunity rather than shameful experience that need to be hidden. Eventually, you shall see your child “own” their behavior – even when it’s hard – rather than shifting the blame to somebody else.

3. Be soulful and jovial

Managing our moods, positive thinking, optimism, celebration of life, expressing gratitude, and appreciating our loved ones is a universal bridge that exhilarates human being. Inculcate this into your life so you model the same regularly before your kids. Talk about good behavior and your child will copy you. “Laughter is the best medicine” ALWAYS turns out to be true! The more we laugh, the merrier we become! It actually changes our body Dopamine: the happiness hormone. So,remember that smiling makes us happier, even when we initially force it. A positive behavior uplifts everyone.

4. Support your family unconditionally

As parents, you should role model to your child the importance of family in your life. It is just like fathers treat their child’s mommy, the sons are going to treat their wives. If you show them that you stand by them firm and sound and support them unconditionally, they will exhibit the same behavior and will be a bonding agent of family and friends. Never discuss or bring forth any tensed environment in front of a child otherwise, they may develop negativity which will be tough to wash away.

Celebration of festival is also an art and when this celebration is with the kids, it becomes all the more fun-filled as to how you celebrate it with them. India has a rich heritage and history. With this, there are festivals which are associated to Indian culture, tradition and history. Just followed by the English new year, India as a nation celebrates Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal in the month of January all in a line. It is not just important that we celebrate all these with the child but it is also necessary to tell them why these festivals are celebrated and why are they important. With this, a child must be taught to hold love and respect for festivals of all regions and cultures to grow up as a human being who gels with the community they are to face in future.

Let us see how parents and teacher can make most out of these festivals by taking these in the right spirit.

Celebrating Lohri

Celebrating Lohri

Lohri is a popular folk festival of Punjab, celebrated primarily by Sikhs and many Hindus as well. The festival marks the end of winter season and a celebration of new harvest. It is also known as the financial new year. Plant your own harvest. Make your child plant some seeds and watch them get in real touch of a festival. Let kids make their own mini bonfires with tea light candles. Involve their friends as well for an added pep to the fest. Call over kids over a Popcorn party. See them with different flavors of popcorn. Chocolate and caramel popcorn are a hit these days! Let your little one help you with baking some relishing cupcakes, besan laddoos and much more. Buy kites and do DIY crafts to make kites out of kite paper. Paint the kites. Make kids write their new year wish on the kites and see them enjoy. Do not forget to visit the Gurudwara and do take kids along. Kids learn so much by doing, have them participate in Lohri celebrations.

Celebrating Makar Sankranti

Celebrating Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is an important harvest festival celebrated throughout India. Sankranti is one such festival which parents think are not to be taught much about to kids as it is less than very important. On the contrary, some parents get down to celebrate it with great fervor with their kids. Different celebration including quizzes and games for children can be organized during a hose party. Shop some colorful new clothes for the entire family. Decorate your home by painting kites and hanging them all around your living room. Visiting a mela or a fete is also an alluring option for a grand celebration with kids. Involve children in til laddoo making process. They can simply roll the ladoo dough into little round shape. Many people make rangoli on Makar Sankranti to celebrate the hindi new year. Kids can do that really well and showcase their creativity. Get them required rangoli material and paints and let them draw free in the veranda of your house.

Celebrating Pongal

Celebrating Pongal

Pongal is a Thanks giving festival celebrated mostly in South India. It is a 4 day long festival which is rejoiced by every South Indian family. Pongal, just like Lohri marks the beginning of a new harvest season and celebrates the present harvest in all forms. These festivals are a great chance to provide an awesome learning opportunity to explore the ethnicity of our nation. Pongal celebrates new and good ome and celebration of humanity as well. Take along your children to visit temples as well as an orphanage. Ask them to sort their clothes and donate the old ones to an orphanage. Let your little one help you with little cooking tasks such as getting you veggies from the fridge, arranging cutlery etc. Children should step out with fathers to but stuff like pot and sugarcane to be used in the traditional puja of Pongal. The earlier, the better. When your children are about three or four-years-old, start narrating them stories behind the festivals and rituals followed. Make it fun and interesting as a process. Go shopping with the kids and make them responsible to decide a few things on their own.

Wish you all a very Happy Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Lohri!

A child always needs a guidance on how to differentiate between right and wrong. Parents are often seen guiding the child to respond according to the situation. But the important part is ‘Do parents prepare the child for everything they are to face in future?’ No! No parent can actually do that. Therefore, it is important that the value of life skill development should be inculcated in a child so that they can take informed decisions confidently. There are numerous life skills which are learnt at every stage of life. There is a different set of life skills for kids which are important to be taught during early education years. In this write up, we shall concentrate on Top 10 important life skills for kids who are attending their kindergarten, Preschool, play way or a nursery class. We might not use a heavy word like life skills as these little ones are too small to understand the real meaning and intention behind this. Let’s call these skills the ‘FEEL GOOD HABITS’ so that a child can relate to the life skills in the form of developing habits which will enhance the feel good factor while leading a positive life.

1. Respect for self

A little child does not know the importance for self respect nor do they know the clear meaning of it. You should tell them that they must ensure that someone doesn’t overpower or say demeaning words in any situation.

2. Respect for Others

With self respect, respect for others is also important. A child must be taught that they must respect other’s decision and speech and try to have an ear to listen to and analyse the situation.

3. Timeliness

A famous proverb ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ should be taught in a way so that a child knows the importance of doing everything and being everywhere on time.

4. Tidiness

Cleanliness of your own body and the surroundings is important. Meaning of keeping the vicinity clean and tidy should be inculcated so that the child learns how to manage and keep safe their things at a designated place.

5. Faith in God

Even if you think that you do not want to teach your child that god exists, you at least have to tell them that every good or bad they do in being watched. This instill a sense of differentiating between right doings and wrong doings.

6. Optimism

Being positive about leading ones life is important. Adults get depressed very easily owing to tough situations. Always let your kid know that if they learn to keep happy and satisfied in every situation, they shall find new avenues coming up every now and then.

7. Self-belief

It is important that the child learns to be confident and believes in whatever they do. They should never be criticized. They should be taught how could they be correct instead of to what extent they are wrong.

8. Language and Conduct

Language signifies character of a person. A child should be groomed so that they conduct them gracefully and refrain from using any foul or rude language.

9. Mannerism

Body language and mannerism is an important part of life skills for kids. Respecting elders, eating habits, table manners are some of the key skills important for kids.

10. Prioritizing things

Children should be taught the meaning of urgency and things which can be postponed. It should be clarified that an individual cannot take care of all the tasks all by themselves. They should know how to seek help and manage things.

‘Real Play’ is better than ‘Pretend Play’ in Early Education years

You often must have heard that children learn in a play-way manner. What is this play way method? Does this mean all play and no reads? Maybe not! We should dig deeper and trace out the meaning of real play when put in comparison to pretend play.

There is a common phenomena that many of us have seen while a child is around. Even if a 100 times, a child is given a toy phone, that doesn’t spark interest. While on the other hand, they stare at the glaring screen of a real smart phone and want the real thing to play with. This is one of the reason why children at a very young age know technology earlier and can operate gadgets all by themselves. Fidgeting around with real things is a child’s form of play which should not be stopped but must be encouraged by parents and teachers.

Understanding Pretend Play

When a child is introduced to fictional characters in their books or even real characters who are not physically present at that moment, such a practice is called as ‘pretend learning’ or ‘fictional learning’. Superman or any other comic character or a postman or a doctor is not present beside a child when they read or learn about them. Therefore, they tend to forget every concept related to these people earlier. A child when is a toddler does not respond to rattles or other sound making toys. They rather would love a door bell ring or a sound produced from kitchen utensils. Pretend play is not a formal part of learning as it is less related to real life experience. But, this can invoke sensory powers of a child and lets them imagine an entire fairy land. Fictional characters in movies are a part of pretend learning as it is a conceptualized story and not always a real one. Pretend play or viewing content that is unreal ca sometimes invite disruptive behavior amongst kids.

Understanding Real Play

We have often heard the word Internship. This a practical training after a young graduate completes or is about to complete a theoretical degree. Young children often prefer real play with real things. That’s a good sign of the nature as this natural inclination towards learning real time is sure to bring results that just theoretical knowledge can never do. But a thousand rupee remote control car for your boy and see them cling onto real car’s steering while father drives. That is how a child expresses love to touch real objects. Similarly, a little girl does not love a doll more than she loves to play in the kitchen with the utensils and the water tap while mother cooks food.

Which is the best form of learning: Pretend play versus Real play?

No learning can be attributed as the greatest for of learning. At school, theory is of immense importance. A child necessarily has to learn mathematical tables in a less play way manner. So, schools always incline to pretend learning as they have to look closely to child safety. Real play and learning includes dealing with real objects which can be hazardous. Therefore, school function more on theoretical and pretend play. But, schools also do not ignore the value of real play and make use of tools like Virtual Reality, Smart Class, Robotics and Role plays for better teaching learning experience.

Home is the ideal place where play method of learning can be administered under careful watch of parents. A balance of both pretend play and real play polishes a child and gets him ready to face the world outside and develop cognitive capacities.

Practicing real-life activities is a universal form of play. It’s what children choose to do in their free time and what drives their interest and motivation, and it usually includes interaction with other children”

CHILDHOOD AND OBESITY

It is important that we understand that obesity is bad for people of all ages. Obesity in childhood ,however, is much more a matter of concern. Parents and teachers both have a role in dealing with obesity. A child alone cannot deal with it and needs guidance. Let’s hover and know more about obesity as a major problem in childhood being faced these days.

Comparing with the yesteryears

Obesity, half a century ago, was not a problem. It was considered as an accidental case met by few. Children in 90’s had a completely different lifestyle as compared to what they have today. Earlier in times, kids had a different day’s routine which involved a lot of fat and fibre as a food diet and physical activities like playing in the park, running around the field and the like. Today, technology, despite being a boon for the brain have failed to act as a tonic for the body. Computers, laptops, tabs and television sets have glued the children inside four walls. This has made them go weak on the inside and have made them less active. Not only this, food was in the purest form and stress on fats and carbs once were a source of energy for kids. Today, junk is the new hero! Junk takes nutrients away even what remains in the body as natural fibre or protein.

Reasons for Childhood Obesity

1. Jump to Junk

Junk food is low on nutrition and high on calories. Increasing socialization amongst kids and their parents have led to rise in social gatherings and parties too. Birthdays and anniversaries are heavy and so is the food for guests. Children on these parties tend to have a lot of calorie high food items like cakes and pastries, soft drinks, pizzas and much more. The fat consumed or calories taken does not burn in the absence of physical activities. Food habits have to be kept on a strong checking scale. ‘Junk food’ and high sugar intake is the biggest cause behind childhood obesity. Keep a close check on it!harvard health

2. Technology Trivia

Technology is a boon. But not for child’s health. Popping eyes to the laptop screen is detrimental for children and it’s high time we should understand that. Children once loved to play around the park. Falls and bruised at play never made them leave their love for the parks and roadsides. Parents are more protective now. They wish to see the child in front of their eyes. Therefore, they do not allow them to go out. It is not wrong to be protective towards your child but binding them limiting to the boundaries of home . This accelerates the tendency of obesity during childhood. Excessive TV viewing for long hours is a malpractice amongst children even if they are watching educational content.

3. No merry go rounds

No merry go rounds, no swings, no poshampas! The life for children is dull and monotonous. As parents, give them an opportunity to play. Take them to parks. Go to different parks with them. Let them experience what childhood is! A dull and boring life leaves with a child with no option except sitting idle, watching TV and eating junks with a cherry on top ‘Entering a no exercise zone’. So, absence of an effective exercise/ yoga regime will ultimately lead to child obesity.tips for obesity

Smart Tip: Obesity is sometimes a genetic thing which comes naturally. There are ways to avoid and cure it too. Consult a child physician or a specialist for the same and never ignore child obesity. Years of accumulated problem of a child being obese will be later tough to deal with.
