preschool activities at home

With prices rising everyday, most parents are busy trying to earn a living and making sure that their children go to good schools to have the best education they can afford.  As a result, they are so tired when they return home that children are often ignored.  Consequently children are found sitting in front of the television till it is time for bed.

But it is essential that parents do not leave all the ‘fun’ and ‘activities’ for the teacher, they too must spend some time showing children that whatever is available at home can also be adjusted and created into something that is stimulating and entertaining.  A simple story read out loud by a mother or father can become a ‘favorite’ one.  Read with expression, try to change your voice with every character, show the children the pictures in the book.  You could even try enacting out the story with both ‘Mama and Papa’ role playing. The excitement and laughter will change the atmosphere at home.

A doll house is often costly and bulky and then includes more expenses when you have to furnish it.  Instead take a cardboard box, allow the child to paint it with her favorite colors, cut out windows, throw in a few cushions or some spare ‘dupattas’ you might have lying around and your house is ready.  The child can sit in it and even have a meal or two in the house that she built and decorated.  If the child doesn’t like the idea of turning the cardboard box into a house, turn it into a ‘pretend’ car asking ‘Papa’ to push it around a few times so that he feels he is ‘driving’.

The monsoons are here and the child cannot go out to play and she is bored and restless with all the pent up energy.  Both the child and the mother or father can benefit from ‘follow the leader’.  You can ‘exercise’ by swinging your arms, touching your toes, running in one place, stretching your arms towards the ceiling, etc.  Tell your child to imitate your actions, he or she will be thrilled to be able to do the same thing that you are doing and will also make him or her feel more adult like.  This will release all the extra energy, keep both of your healthier as well build up an appetite.

Children enjoy filling up bags and baskets.  Set up a grocery store, use empty or ‘nearly empty’ boxes you might have at home.  You can also use some small containers which can be easily handled by your children.  Children will learn the names of not only the items you are ‘selling’ but also numbers.  Items can be counted when setting up and asking ‘how many’ and ‘selling’ – encourage the child to ask the cost of everything.  If the child has begun learning addition and subtraction in school, items and prices can be added or taken away, thus revising math concepts and skills.

Activities at home allow you to spend time with your child, have fun with him and also mold him in various ways.  Make them part of your and your child’s schedule and watch the expressions of joy and thrill on his face every time you are together.

Let us go back to the era when there were no schools! Let us even go back further – when the modern world didn’t exist! Let us even go even further back – till you can imagine! There always existed some form of pre schooling. Yes I am serious. May be not in the form of colourful brick & mortar structure – but they were. It is not just for humans but for animals too.

Earlier the grandparents acted the note of teachers and the siblings & kids from neighbourhood were classmates and other elder family members were like visiting faculty to teach specific skills. The children were very comfortable in the secured environment of the family and home. Now the preschools are playing the same role because the times have changed. Nuclear families and working mothers especially, have necessitated the need of preschools to fulfil that role.

Let’s now elaborate and understand.

In a class a teacher was teaching science. During the discussion the teacher told class that Oxygen was discovered in 1783!

The class got confused: – If oxygen was discovered in 1783, how could people breathe before?

You are thinking correctly: Exactly it was not named oxygen but it existed! Similar is the case of preschooling.  Only we didn’t name or see playschools there.

We all know that human beings are social animals. The development of a child is directly proportional to the kind of environment he or she is in!

I am not a great advocate of the Child Brain Development at an early age but I advocate very energetically and aggressively the development of the social skills and motor development. I very firmly believe that preschool provides those set of conditions which accelerate the social skills and motor skills in a child which helps the child in reaching greater heights in life.

The modern world and the world of tomorrow needs children who are balanced and socially comfortable in this world where boundaries are fast in vanishing. Children are expected to be more sociable and adaptable.

Preschool promotes social and emotional development

High-quality preschool programs nurture warm relationships among children, teachers and parents. This helps the children in trusting relationships.

Young children learn social skills and emotional self-control on their own. They learn to manage frustrations or anger. This lays the foundation of independence among children.

Children learn to take care of themselves and others

Children’s sense of competence and self-worth grow as they learn to take care of themselves and help others. Teachers appeal to a young child’s desire to engage in activities by offering them chances to help out in the classroom, for example, by setting the table at snack time or helping in other little ways. Children are expected to wash their hands before snack time, keep personal belongings in their respective places and put away toys before moving to a new activity.

Throughout their school years, much of children’s learning takes place in the company of their peers. Children are introduced to various types of behaviours required to function successfully in a formal school. In a conversational manner, and without dominating the discussion, teachers help children stretch their language skills by asking thought-provoking questions and introducing new vocabulary during science, art, snack time, and other activities. Children have many opportunities to sing, talk about their favourite read-aloud books, and act out stories.

Young children show growing interest in pre-maths and pre-literacy skills. They are curious and observant, and they want to be competent in their early day to day skills — such as reading the instructions for assembling a toy, or selecting the correct bills or coins to pay for a purchase.

Singing an alphabet song while following along in a picture book builds a child’s awareness of the connections between alphabet letters and word sounds. Learning rhymes and recitation helps them to notice the distinct sounds within words. Engaging children in a discussion about an exciting read-aloud story encourages their listening, comprehension, and expressive language skills. Playing with alphabet letters may inspire children to ask a teacher to help them write the first letter of their name.

June 5^th, World Environment Day is an annual celebration dedicated to raise & address concerns related to the world’s environment. This world is our home and its environment is something that every human need to live.

United Nations as the World Environment Day (WED) first commenced this day in 1972. This day was established to create awareness of the environment in the general people. This day is an encouragement for Public & the Government to praise our environment, its resources, and work to conserve it. Since 1972, each year a different country is appointed to host this event/day. India hosted this day in 2011 with the theme of Forest.

How we can help our environment?

We all can make small contributions for the damage control & bring positive changes in our environment. As the name suggests World, we all should work together to save our planet. We can celebrate this day by planting a tree; schools can adopt a nearby park, and a group of people can clean their surroundings on this special day. In addition, campaigns to raise awareness, debates, conference, and parade can also be conducted.

THE EARTH DAY 2015

Doth glance from heaven to earth,

From earth to heaven;

And as imagination bodies forth

Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Mother Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution.  What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother, but SHE can live without humans.

We carry Mother Earth within us. She is not outside of us. Mother Earth is not just environment. We should honour Mother Earth with gratitude; otherwise our spirituality may become hypocritical.

All European tradition, Marxism included, has conspired the natural order of all things. Mother Earth has been abused, the powers have been abused, and this cannot go forever. We can not have equilibrium in this world with the current inequality and destruction of Mother Earth. Capitalism is what is causing this problem and it needs to end. No theory can alter that simple fact, Mother Earth will retaliate, the whole environment will retaliate, the whole environment will retaliate, and the abuses and the abusers will be eliminated.

Mother earth needs us to keep our covenant. We will do this at our home, at our work place, and we will commit to our descendants to work hard to protect this land and water for them. Whether you have feet, wings, fins, or roots, we are all in it together.

Mother Earth is changing and it is happening at alarming rate. People around the world are suffering from poverty and malnutrition while others fear about the demand for natural resources and how much time we have before they run out. Population growth is a huge matter in countries such as India and China, where as in Australia depletion of ozone layer worry.

The biggest challenge to the face of the Mother Earth is CLIMATE CHANGE.  The BIG CAUSE of climate change is GLOBAL WARMING from the GREENHOUSE GASES and CARBON EMISSIONS.  Human impact is causing more Greenhouse gases to be produced by burning fossil fuels and deforestation. This causes them to get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere making the temperature rise. It is now a fact that the world is getting hotter and Earth is the hottest it has been in at least 400 years, and possibly even the last 2,000 years. Studies show that the global surface temperature has increase by approximately 0.3-0.6° C over the last century. This may seem like a small difference but it has big consequences.

These temperatures will continue to increase and by the end of the 21^st century average global temperatures may increase by 1.4-5.8° C. Besides resulting in more hot days, many scientists believe an increase in temperatures may lead to changes in precipitation and weather patterns. Ocean waters will become warmer and this may result in more intense and frequent tropical storms and hurricanes. The number of hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years and will continue to increase with global warming.

Sea levels are also expected to increase by 0.09-0.88 meter in the next century, mainly from melting glaciers and rising seawaters. Most of the world’s population lives on or near the coasts. Global sea levels could rise by more the 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide. If the polar ice cap were to melt then sea levels worldwide would increase by 20ft, Shangahai home to 40 million people would be underwater, the Bay of Bengal, Kolkata, India home to 60 million people would be completely gone. Think of the impact.
